At Biological Reserve Cerro Hermoso — Leptophis Mexicanus

Known as the Mexican parrot snake or Mexican parakeet, this snake is found at low and moderate elevations on the Atlantic slope from the southern area of ​​Tamaulipas, Mexico, to the north-central region of Costa Rica and discontinuously on the Pacific slope from Oaxaca, Mexico to northwest Costa Rica.


It is part of the genus Leptophis, which includes snakes known as frogs due to their diet based on small amphibians, although they also eat lizards, small snakes, salamanders, tadpoles and bird eggs. This genus has 8 species that inhabit forests, mangroves and sheets of Mexico, Central America and South America.

Conocida como lora mexicana o perico mexicana, esta culebra se encuentra en elevaciones bajas y moderadas de la vertiente del Atlántico desde la zona sur de Tamaulipas, México, a la región centro norte de Costa Rica y en forma discontinua en la vertiente del Pacífico desde Oaxaca, México hasta el noroeste de Costa Rica.


Forma parte del género Leptophis que incluye serpientes conocidas como raneras debido a su dieta en base a pequeños anfibios, aunque también comen lagartijas, pequeñas serpientes, salamandras, renacuajos y huevos de aves. Este género cuenta con 8 especies que habitan bosques, manglares y sábanas de México, Centroamérica y Sudamérica.
