The 'formal' word for an opossum in the Spanish language is zarigüeya, but the more commonly used name in the dialect of Spanish spoken in southern Mexico is tlacauche and this is the only marsupial in the American continent.
There are additional species of opossums present in addition to the Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana). The Virginia Opossums in southern Mexico tend to be darker in colour - more of a black, rather than brown, appearance - and have a more pronounced black area around their eyes. The body shape and overall size is the same.
